iDIN becomes itsme

From iDIN to itsme: here is the timeline.

The Dutch banks have transferred iDIN to itsme, the digital identity app that is already the standard in Belgium. The transition runs in four phases until the end of 2027 — with no interruption to your identifications and mandates.

iDIN was created by the Dutch banks (through Currence) and will be developed further by itsme following an official acquisition. itsme meets eIDAS Level of Assurance High — the highest European assurance level — and is available in 32 European countries. All of iDIN's current security and privacy safeguards are preserved.

The four phases of the transition

    1. Until 1 June 2026

      iDIN works as before

Behind the scenes, itsme, the banks and the regulators prepare the migration. Nothing changes yet for end users and organisations.

    2. From 1 June 2026

itsme as an issuer within iDIN

itsme automatically appears as an extra choice in every iDIN selection menu, wherever iDIN is available. No technical changes are needed; the iDIN logo is replaced by the joint transition logo.

    3. 1 June 2026 – 31 December 2027

      Migration to itsme

Organisations move to the full itsme integration, which offers a higher assurance level (relevant for KYC, among other things). iDIN remains available as a fallback during this period.

    4. From 2028

      itsme as the only method

On 31 December 2027 iDIN is discontinued as a standalone service and merges fully into itsme. From 2028 all users, banks and service providers in the Netherlands identify via itsme — identifying via your bank is no longer possible.

In practice the phases overlap, depending on each service provider's development roadmap.

What does this mean for you as a PayIBAN customer?

If you use identification or digital mandates through PayIBAN, the transition happens without interruption:

    No action needed now

Nothing changes until 1 June 2026. Your current identification and mandate flows keep working exactly as they do today.

    itsme as its own button

From 1 June 2026 we offer itsme in the identification flow as its own button next to the bank selection — itsme does not appear among the banks in the list. No configuration required on your side.

    New BIN number, same customer

A customer who signs in with itsme gets a new BIN number — just as when switching banks. PayIBAN follows the iDIN standard, so this works the same way it does today.

    Switched to itsme in time

Well before 31 December 2027 we will have the full itsme integration ready for you, so identification and mandates continue without interruption.
